Utah Census Research

Federal censuses in Utah began in 1850 and continued every ten years thereafter.

The 1850 census for Utah Territory was taken in 1851. It is available on shaferoneil.com, and has also been reproduced alphabetically for each county by Annie Walker Burns, First Families of Utah, As Taken From the 1850 Census of Utah (Washington, D.C.: the author, 1949). The index in this volume is for this transcription of the census records and not the original. A second index, the Genealogical Society of Utah's Index to Utah 1851 Census (Salt Lake City: the society, 1950), refers to the original entry in the federal returns and is indexed by surname.

Fragments of what could be construed as territorial or state censuses are available for the years 1852, 1856, 1872, and 1896 with enumerations derived from tax lists. The 1856 and 1859 censuses are indexed in the shaferoneil.com collection Utah Census, 1850-1890. The accuracy of the original 1856 enumeration has been questioned, since it appears to contain names of deceased persons or members of the L.D.S. Church who were not yet in the territory.

An 1852 Bishops Report which listed L.D.S. heads of households in each L.D.S. ward is available on microfilm with an index through the FHL.

Vital records
365体育投注网站In Utah, early legislative acts empowered but did not require certain cities to maintain a register of births and deaths. Beginning in 1898, county clerks were required to keep separate birth and death registers. Statewide recording births and deaths began in 1905. Since marriage was seen as a religious sacrament, the civil registration of marriages was not required in Utah until 1887.

  • : Holds records of births and deaths since 1905, and can verify marriages and divorces since 1978. For earlier records, contact the clerk of the county where the event occurred.
