Interesting Facts

  • Between 1915 and 1940, an estimated 175,000 couples were married in Crown Point, Indiana. The Lake County Courthouse--open 24/7--was a well-known "marriage mill" in the area, drawing couples from Chicago and beyond, where they could get a quick hassle-free marriage. Rudolph Valentino was among those married at the courthouse.
  • The city of Gary, Indiana, sprung up in 1909 around the newly-opened U.S. Steel mill. Chosen for its proximity to Great Lakes and railroad shipping routes, the mill drew more than 16,000 inhabitants and attracted other industries to the area. The city is named after Elbert H. Gary, the then-chairman of U.S. Steel.
  • Only one Civil War battle was fought in Indiana at Corydon. In the brief battle, Confederate troops overcame the Harrison County Home Guard and plundered the shops and local businesses before moving on.

Indiana Census Research

Federal censuses are available for Indiana beginning in 1820. The 1820 census is missing Daviess County.

Many rural residents were missed in the 1850 census, though they may appear on the 1850 agricultural enumerations.

Territorial censuses are available for 1807 and 1810 (for Harrison County only). Few state censuses are available.

Indiana Vital Records
Indiana began registering births and deaths at the county level in 1882. State level registration began for births in October 1907, and in January 1900 for deaths. Marriage records have been mandatory on a county level since before 1800.

  • Indiana State Department of Health – :  Holds records of births from October 1907 and deaths from 1900.   For earlier birth or death records or for marriage records, write to the clerk of the county where the event occurred.
